Franklin & Bash – “L’affaire Du Coeur”

The natural charisma of Mark-Paul Gossalaar and Breckin Meyer is the obvious charm of the show. The stories are fairly thin, if not typical episode-of-the-week fluff. The show has little to offer in the way of meaningful television, and yet it’s very enjoyable to watch.

This particular episode does have a little mystery aspect to it as Franklin & Bash try to track down who is framing a judge for unethical behavior. The last time I saw the actor who plays the judge, Don McManus, was when he played a sleezy card sharp on the ESPN series called Tilt. He still looks sleezy.

Malcolm McDowell as the boys’ lawyer boss also lends a certain amount of charm to the show. As he takes on a case revolving around a gay softball league, some of the plot devices that I feel are mimicking deeper lawyer shows fall flat. I feel like they’re trying to pull off a tongue in cheek Law & Order. I’d rather they just stuck to the wacky stuff and not even try to do the heavy, deep cases.

Since the show was originally part of the TBS lineup, it does seem to fit better on the sister station TNT. TBS has a more farcical lineup, and even though this show is a farce of lawyer shows, it still attempts to be equal parts drama and comedy. Maybe slightly tilted toward drama.
