Tosh.0 – Season 3 Finale
Even though Tosh.0 is broken up throughout the season, with episodes staggered to either give Daniel Tosh a rest or to spread out the ratings for Comedy Central, it seems like this season three finale really came out of nowhere. Does time fly when you’re having fun? Yes, but it also apparently flies for a second-rate clip show, too.
That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy Daniel Tosh. I was a huge fan before he sold out. I just expect more from him. These days it seems like he’s less hit and more miss, since his clips focus on being disgusting instead of funny. Do I really need to see people throwing up after every commercial break?
The true greatest of this show comes from the pre-recorded segments. Tosh has no problem being entertaining on his own, which is why I tune in every week. His web redemptions are fantastic, and all of the office pranks/skits he films are way better than anything Bob Sagat could produce.
But it’s just the clips…well, they’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel. We aren’t even seeing famous clips anymore. I’d love to see what the criteria are for getting on the show, because being hilarious obviously isn’t one of them. Apparently, all you have to do to be featured on Tosh.0 is vomit on someone while doing irreparable harm to your body. Throw in a fat chick or a midget and you’re bumped to the top of the list.
Tosh.0 Episode 26 Recap–Shrooms Guy (Intervention)
Daniel Tosh’s collegiate apparel is the season’s wardrobe of choice, and while he’s usually wearing plain t-shirts, this episode he was sporting a flashy sweater vest. He looked clean cut, which was nice. Unfortunately, that was the only nice thing about the episode.
I’m starting to think that Tosh has jumped the shark. He became real famous, real fast and hasn’t been able to keep up the standards he began with. His original Comedy Central special really put him on the map, and the first season of Tosh.0 doubled that fame. Now…it seems like he’s struggling to keep up with the fan appreciation.
Case in point: this week’s Web Redemption segment was replaced with a Web Intervention. Daniel sought out a man who was trippin’ on ‘shrooms in what I assume was at one time a popular viral video. I’ll have to take his word for it, because I’ve never heard of it and neither has anyone I’ve talked to. The segment was actually boring, a rarity for a comedy show. Sure, every show like this has a low point, but its usually because I just don’t appreciate the brand of comedy. This time around…well, I was just waiting for it to be over.
There was a great opening with a bicyclist getting tackled by a caribou, but outside of that the clips were lackluster and somewhat offensive. And not the good kind of offensive, either! Call me crazy, but a 100 year-old stripper doesn’t scream hilarious to me. It screams pitiful.
Tosh…you’re better than that.
Tosh.0 Season 3 Premiere
The newest season of Tosh.0 is finally upon us, and the titular host with the most doesn’t seem to have lost a step. Promising to go big or go home, he certainly delivered as he opened in front of his largest in-house audience yet: Arizona State University. Tradition for the season opener dictates that Tosh reveal the trending t-shirt or hoodie that he’ll be sporting throughout the season. Last season “revealed arms” didn’t last more than one episode, however this year’s choice, collegiate apparel, shouldn’t have too much trouble sticking around.
The selection of clips throughout the episode did not disappoint hardcore Tosh fans. He’s known for collecting and parodying some of the most ridiculous video segments that people have posted on the web, and the episode boasted everything from possibly handicapped rappers to poop-squirting babies. There are no limits as far as Tosh is concerned, except for what the censors choose to blur out.
The standard segments fans have come to love and enjoy were again present, consisting of putting twenty seconds on the clock, the video breakdown, and the web redemption. The web redemption in particular, where Tosh tracks down an internet sensation that’s embarrassed him or herself, bordered on offensive. Whether or not the rapper in question was actually handicapped was not established, but it was painfully obvious that part of the joke was the unspoken insinuation. Even the inclusion of Skylar Grey wasn’t enough to elevate the segment’s respectability.
A welcome surprise was Todd Glass starring in a sketch. Glass has popped several times on the show, typically yelling and swearing at a woman. It isn’t the sexism that makes the sketches funny, it’s the insanity and self-deprecation. Glass always reveals his own prank within seconds of beginning it, spilling the beans and losing his dignity in the process.
The final segment featured Tosh meeting fans on the Arizona State University campus, giving each of them ten seconds to say whatever they wanted. Tosh admits that most of his “fans” hate his guts, so he wanted to see if they would state their displeasures to his face. Some did, but most were flattered to be in his presence. There are only nine episodes left this year, but so far things are off to a better than average start.
