63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards!
Jane Lynch was in rare form during the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, as the audience was treated to a bit of song and dance from the sarcastic actress. The show-opener sported some very familiar faces like Leonard Nemoy and the entire cast of The Big Bang Theory, but Lynch had no trouble stealing the spotlight in every scene. She may have even picked up a few tips from her fellow Glee cast members as she poked fun at her own character from the show. While the opener started as a recorded bit, it ended live at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and Lynch held her own using her real singing voice amongst the trained professionals.
Modern Family pulled out an early lead during the ceremonies, with Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen both claiming the coveted Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series awards (respectively). Every adult member of the show was nominated in various categories, while the show’s writers and the show itself picked up a couple trophies as well, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Burrell may have had the most touching acceptance speech of the night, as he relayed to the captive audience what his father, who had passed away before Burrell began acting, would have thought of his profession.
Charlie Sheen delivered an award, but not before offering his apparent best wishes to the cast of his former show, Two and a Half Men. It was surprising that Sheen not only presented by himself, but that he seemed to do so with dignity. Given his time on the negative side of the Hollywood spotlight for how he left the show, it seems like Sheen is trying to garner some positive word of mouth for his image.
The largest applause of the night went to Kyle Chandler for playing his character on Friday Night Lights. Even when his name was merely mentioned for the nomination the room was bursting with applause, let alone when he took the stage to accept his award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series. He looked disheveled, but not because of his surprise from winning the stylish Emmy. The back of his tux severely needed to be ironed, and his hair needed to be raked with a comb. Still, he graciously accepted the award and was greeted with roaring appreciation from his peers.
The only down point of the evening was Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island group overtaking the stage. Their songs, while at one time popular, have become almost grating to hear, despite the fact that they have talented performers such as Akon and Michael Bolten lending their voices. Jon Stewart, after taking the stage to accept on behalf of The Daily Show for Outstanding Variety, Music or comedy Series, voiced his displeasure of the songs’ risqué themes. It was hard to disagree with him since these award shows are viewed by all audiences, and not just the small niche market that adore Andy Samberg. While the songs are enjoyed and quirky, they are better left for the cut scenes during Saturday Night Live, where they first originated.
